25% off As Dreams Fall Apart: The Golden Age of Jewish Stage and Film Music (1925–1955)
For the week of Hanukkah (8 days beginning at sundown on Dec. 12), our 25% OFF Featured CD is the New Budapest Orpheum Society’s As Dreams Fall Apart: The Golden Age of Jewish Stage and Film Music (1925–1955), which you’ll find among our Holiday Recommendations for the season of giving. While many composers are represented on this Grammy-nominated collection, it centers around the singular figure of Hermann Leopoldi (1888–1959), whose musical and life journey took him from Vienna, to the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps, to New York, and ultimately back to Vienna. Many of Leopoldi’s songs became instant classics including “Café Brazil,” “I Am a Quiet Drinker,” and “A Little Café Down the Street” (aka In einem kleinen Café in Hernals), all of which are included on the album.
For our free download, I have chosen Leopoldi’s hilarious “Composers’ Revolution in Heaven” in which Leopoldi dreams he has arrived in paradise to find all of the great composers moaning about how their music is being incorporated and corrupted by other composers (without a penny in royalties). Of course, the song consists almost entirely of Leopoldi himself stealing their tunes. Chicago baritone/cantor Stewart Figa has a field day with the song’s comedic possibilities.
Wishing all a Happy Hanukkah and —
